The Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at New York University School of Law is a leading hub for human rights research, practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through its programs and initiatives, the Center advances innovative work at the intersection of human rights, climate justice, technology, and global governance. 

Position overview 

The Executive Team at the Center is seeking a highly organized and proactive student assistant to support the Center’s core operations across projects, financial tracking, and events. 

This role is ideal for: 

  • someone who enjoys working across multiple streams of work, 
  • is comfortable with administrative and operational tasks, 
  • and is eager to gain exposure to the inner workings of a dynamic research center.

The student assistant will report to the Executive Director and work closely with program and operations staff across the Center.

This position offers hands-on experience in the operational side of a leading global research center, including exposure to project management, budgeting, and high-level convenings with global scholars and practitioners.

Key Responsibilities

Project & Program Support

  • Assist with coordination and tracking of ongoing projects across Center initiatives (e.g., FORGE, COMPASS, MOTH, FORGE, CLX, Prevention, Student Fellowships)
  • Maintain internal trackers, timelines, and documentation for program activities
  • Support preparation of materials for meetings, convenings, and internal planning

Finance & Administrative Support

  • Assist with expense tracking, reconciliation, and documentation (e.g., Concur reports, receipts, invoice preparation)
  • Support budget monitoring across projects and events
  • Help organize financial records and ensure compliance with NYU processes

Events & Convenings

  • Support logistics and operations for Center events (workshops, conferences, speaker series, and special convenings)
  • Assist with vendor coordination, materials preparation, and on-site event support
  • Help manage RSVP tracking, check-in processes, and post-event follow-up

General Operations

  • Provide administrative support to the Center team as needed
  • Help maintain organized systems across shared drives and internal workflows

Qualifications 

Required

  • Applicants must be current NYU Law JD (1L or 2L) students.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Calendar, docs, forms, sheets, slides)
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Comfort working with spreadsheets and administrative systems
  • Strong English communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Reliability, initiative, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Preferred

  • Interest in global rights issues including climate, or technology governance
  • Experience with financial tracking, budgeting, or administrative workflows (including grants oversight and reporting) 
  • Prior experience supporting events or program coordination
  • Proficiency in Spanish is highly desirable
  • Experience with website development (WordPress, Squarespace) and Mailchimp

Position Details

  • Start Date: May 11, 2026  (or sooner)
  • Duration: Semester-based, with possibility of extension. 
  • Hours: ~15–20 hours/week (flexible around class schedule)
  • Location: Hybrid (NYU School of Law + remote flexibility)
  • Compensation: $17.00/hour aligning with current NYU rates
