Mar. 23: Summer Equal Justice America Legal Services Fellowships

Posted on

Equal Justice America is pleased to offer summer fellowship grants up to $5,000. These grants are available to law students who attend a qualifying law school and are working full time for an organization that provides direct civil legal aid services.  (Please note, it is necessary for students from some law schools to find a placement with an organization located in the same state as the school.)

  • Students must secure a full-time (35 hours per week) placement for the summer working a minimum of 10 weeks at a civil legal services organization.

  • Summer fellowships must take place in the United States. The hiring organization must be a non-profit organization providing direct civil legal services.
  • PLACEMENTS WITH PUBLIC DEFENDER OFFICES AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES DO NOT QUALIFY.
  • EJA Fellowship recipients may receive additional grant money from other funding sources up to a maximum of $12,000 for the summer. If an EJA Fellowship recipient receives additional funding from another source, increasing their total funding beyond $12,000, EJA will reduce its grant accordingly.
The deadline to apply is March 23, 2023. Decisions will be announced via email by late April/early May.

The application will require the following:

  • A cover letter that explains your interest in providing civil legal services to people who are experiencing economic hardship and systemic barriers (Please also indicate if you are applying for or have received funding from any other sources.)
  • A resume or CV
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Employment verification from the hiring organization that indicates how many hours and weeks you will be working
