The Alliance of Families for Justice (afj-ny.org), an organization dedicated to supporting and mobilizing the incarcerated and their family members within New York State, will be onboarding law student interns for three different pro bono projects with our Legal Support Unit.
The 50 hours of pro bono work required of students to graduate can be fulfilled through completion of these projects; however, please be advised that we are seeking students who will be committed to completing the work assigned in collaboration with our Lead Attorneys (https://afj-ny.org/legal-support-unit).
#1. Clemency Project
AFJ’s pro-bono opportunity will include students working alongside our Lead Attorneys and undertaking work regarding incarcerated clients who are seeking clemency within New York State.
AFJ’s Clemency Project for student volunteers will be a yearlong commitment from Spring 2023 – Fall 2023, with student holiday breaks and exams being accommodated.
#2. Visitation Revocation Project
Many family members of incarcerated individuals have been banned from visiting their loved ones for a variety of arbitrary reasons. In partnerships with other lawyers across the state, we have embarked on a class action lawsuit, in addition to other advocacy measures to address this issue.
AFJ’s Visitation Revocation Project for student volunteers will be a semester-long commitment during Spring 2023, with student holiday breaks and exams being accommodated.
#3. Parole Preparation Project
We assist incarcerated individuals in preparing for their parole interviews.
AFJ’s Parole Preparation Project for student volunteers will be a semester-long commitment during Spring 2023, with student holiday breaks and exams being accommodated.

Interviews will take place by phone on a rolling basis, and potential student interns will be notified by email if selected for an interview.
