Imagine an apocalypse scenario in which human civilization will be destroyed but then built anew. In this apocalypse, all knowledge will be lost and forgotten. But one discipline’s worth of knowledge can be preserved – sent into space to land on Earth as humanity is rebuilding. It will be met by a new human population who can still understand language and who will be able to understand the preserved material, but who have lost memory of and access to things like technology, infrastructure, academic knowledge, and cultural knowledge. Which discipline should be saved, and why?
It’s five professors debating on behalf of their own fields, plus one “devil’s advocate” professor arguing why we should toss everything out and let the growth of knowledge start over.
The event will be around 90 minutes long, with a vote at the end, and a reception.
Friday April 10th, Meyer 121 (Main event: 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM; Reception: 6:00 – 7:00 PM)
