2026 Peace Fellowships

The Center for Human Rights and Victims of Violations (CHRV) at Kathmandu University
in Nepal and The Advocacy Project in Washington DC are seeking applications from students
to join a pioneering new academic program on transitional justice recently launched by CHRV.
The program is the first to study transitional justice – one of the fastest-growing areas of human
rights – from the perspective of victims and survivors. It is directed by Dr Ram Bhandari PhD, a
leading advocate and academic whose father disappeared during the conflict in Nepal in 2001.
The program is offering two courses this year – a 6-week course for international students in the
summer and a 10-week course for Nepali students in the Fall. The summer course will combine
academic study with hands-on experience of human rights practice against a backcloth of
dynamic political change in Nepal. Dr Bhandari and his team will organize field visits to
memory sites in Bardiya district; meetings with families of the disappeared; lectures from past
truth commissioners and members of the Nepal Human Rights Commission; meetings with
family members of the disappeared; guest lectures from eminent Nepali human rights
practitioners; and a special tribute to traditional Tharu culture. The course will culminate with a
field project to help applicants fulfill their own study requirements, such as Capstone projects.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss this with their academic advisors before applying.
The Advocacy Project is offering four scholarships of $1,000 to successful applicants for the
summer course. Click here for more information about our 2026 fellowship program and
