Job Description
Prof. Jeff Sebo and the NYU Wild Animal Welfare Program (WAWP) are currently seeking a part-time research assistant (RA) to assist with a number of ongoing projects relating to urban wild animals, local wildlife policy, and animal welfare in international law.
The NYU Wild Animal Welfare Program conducts research aimed at advancing our understanding about what wild animals are like, how humans and wild animals interact, and how humans can improve our interactions with wild animals at scale. Learn more about the Wild Animal Welfare Program.
RAs will work as part of the WAWP research team on one or more of the following projects:
- Research on opportunities for incorporating wild animal welfare into local policies on climate, land use, infrastructure, pest management, and other issues;
- Research on opportunities for including animal welfare considerations in the post-2030 sustainable development goals (SDG) agenda;
- Research on mandates and gaps within existing international legal frameworks concerning the environment, health, and agriculture as it relates to animal welfare issues; and
- Preparation of expert testimonies and public comments for federal and state bills relating to the welfare of wild animals (for example, a proposed ban on rodenticide).
In each case, this support may involve conducting research, preparing memos, drafting text, and/or helping with notes, references, and formatting. Time permitting, we may take on other, similar projects as well.
Schedule
- Approximately 10-15 hours per week for the duration of the role
- We can be flexible about how these hours are distributed each week
Evaluations
Performance evaluation will take place at the end of the project.
Position Expectations and Compensation
This position will begin in Summer or Fall 2025, with a possibility of renewal for an additional semester depending on need and budget at the time. RAs will be permitted to work remotely. Weekly on-site or remote meetings with a researcher from WAWP are required.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Law, the minimum and maximum hourly wage for this position is $30.00 per hour.
Eligibility
This position is open to graduate students and law students. Ideal candidates will have a demonstrated interest in and passion for wild animal welfare issues and, preferably, past experience or completed coursework in local, state and/or international environmental law and policy or other relevant areas.
Federal Work-Study is not required for this role, unless specifically stated within the job description. If you are eligible to receive Federal Work-Study funds, your eligibility status will be disclosed to the hiring manager to ensure proper processing if hired.
