New York State Board of Law Examiners Press Release

On January 8, 2025, the New York State Court of Appeals announced that effective for the July 2028 administration of the New York State bar examination, the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) will be replaced by the NextGen Bar Examination (NextGen).

The Court of Appeals has determined further that New York will not accept NextGen transfer scores from any NextGen examination administered prior to July 2028. Several states will begin administering the NextGen examination in July 2026, while others will continue to administer the UBE. New York will continue to accept UBE transfer scores consistent with current policies. Candidates seeking admission to the bar in New York should consider this in determining which
bar examination they sit for from July 2026 through February 2028.

Additional information regarding the state’s administration of the NextGen Bar Examination, will be shared once available.
