Speaker Bio:
Justyna Gudzowska has spent her career at the intersection of illicit finance and international security. She is an expert on sanctions, corruption, terrorism financing, and money laundering, having worked on these issues across the public and private sectors. She is currently the Executive Director of The Sentry, an investigative and policy organization that seeks to expose and disrupt actors profiting from the conflict, corruption, and natural resource exploitation that drive human suffering. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service (SFS) where she teaches a class on illicit finance, and an Associate Fellow at the UK-based Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the world’s oldest defense and security think tank. She has also taught at Yale Law School as a Visiting Lecturer in Law.
Prior to joining The Sentry, Justyna was the lead sanctions attorney at Morgan Stanley, overseeing the implementation of sanctions for the bank’s offices across the globe. She also advised the bank on anti-corruption, anti-money laundering, and reputational issues, and frequently liaised with regulators. From 2013-2018, with ISIS posing an increasing threat to global security, Justyna worked for the United Nations, advising the Security Council on countering global terrorist groups and devising innovative means to combat terrorist financing. Prior to serving at the United Nations, she was a legal advisor to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, where she worked on a variety of sanctions programs.
Earlier in her career, Justyna was an attorney at the international law firms Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton and Debevoise & Plimpton. She received her Juris Doctor from Yale Law School, where she was the Student Director of the Schell Center for International Human Rights, and holds master’s degrees from the University of Cambridge and the London School of Economics, where she was a Marshall Scholar, and a B.A. from Rice University.
