Nov. 01: Call for Applications for the 2027 Gallatin Global Human Rights Fellowship

The Gallatin Office of Global Programs is now accepting applications for the Gallatin Global Fellowship in Human Rights for 2027, due by November 1, 2026. Attend an information session to learn more.

About the Fellowship

The fellowship awards $6,500 to fund summer projects and internships with human rights organizations globally. The program entails a year-long commitment: a 2-credit weekly human rights seminar and a related 2-credit independent study in Spring 2027, 10-12 weeks of work with an organization during Summer 2027, and a short symposium presentation in Fall 2027.

Eligibility

The program is open to all undergraduate students in degree-granting programs at NYU and to master’s students in Tandon, Gallatin, the College of Global Public Health, the Graduate School of Arts and Science, Nursing, the School of Law, Social Work, Steinhardt, Tisch, and Wagner. All fellows must be matriculated at NYU during Spring and Summer 2027, and undergraduate fellows must plan to graduate no earlier than January 2028.

Fellows must plan to study at NYU’s NYC campus in Spring 2027 and register for the human rights seminar and the related independent study. Fellows should plan to live on location and intern in person during Summer 2027.

More About the Fellowship

This prestigious fellowship allows students to pursue projects in tandem with a variety of human rights organizations around the globe, combining scholarly inquiry with fieldwork. It also presents awardees with the opportunity to refine their academic trajectories at NYU. Prof. Vasuki Nesiah is the academic director of the fellowship program; Assistant Dean Mehmet Darakcioglu is the administrative director.

We take a broad and interdisciplinary approach to human rights and are open to a variety of engagements and global locations. The following are examples of organizations that would qualify:

  • A trans activist group that seeks to change how health services describe and deal with gender identity in efforts to expand people’s access and right to health
  • A labor union that seeks to recruit, educate, and empower workers to ensure a politically aware and mobilized workforce that can agitate for its rights
  • An organization that invokes human rights while being critical of the framework and rethinking it through another perspective (e.g., class analysis, feminist framework, etc.).
  • An organization that advocates for protecting freedom of expression for journalists, academics, and intellectuals around the world.

Application Process

Identify and contact an organization working in the human rights field that will agree to host you as a fellow, and propose a viable human rights-related project.

You should also develop ideas for the related Spring 2027 independent study and identify and contact a full- or part-time NYU faculty member who can oversee it. The application requires a recommendation letter from this faculty member.
