September 28: Deadline to Register for Fall 2026 Writing Credit & Directed Research

Posted on

Dear Students,

The fall 2026 deadline to add an Option A Writing Credit and Directed Research is Monday, September 28, 2026. If you are interested in registering, you must follow the instructions here and get the approval of the appropriate program office.

Writing Credit:

This writing credit is the Option A Writing Credit, which satisfies the J.D. Substantial Writing graduation requirement. Please see our Substantial Writing Requirements webpage for detailed information about the requirement and for a list of classes with an Option A writing credit component. Please note that the writing credit is only for students pursuing an Option A paper, not Option B.

To register for a writing credit, please submit an add request through the Law Registrar’s Service Desk. If faculty permission is required, please attach the faculty’s permission to your add request.

Note: If you selected the Priority Option in COURSES and won the seminar/colloquium, this did not automatically register you for the writing credit. You must add the writing credit to your schedule if you are pursuing an Option A paper.

Directed Research:

To add a Directed Research, a written proposal must be submitted to the student’s program office no later than Monday, September 28. The proposal must either be signed by the supervising professor or the student must present an email from the professor approving the proposal at the time of submission. The written proposal ordinarily is at least 1,000 words and should describe the subject matter of the Directed Research and the issues the student intends to explore in the paper.

Please note that adjunct professors can only supervise Directed Research with the approval of Vice Dean Randy Hertz. The Directed Research proposal should be submitted to the student’s program office first. Your program office will then forward the same for Vice Dean Hertz’s approval.

Please check our Directed Research webpage for more information regarding the procedures to register for Directed Research.
