Nature of Research:
Prof Alvarez is writing two separate books and needs substantive research for both.
1. specific topics relating to contemporary forms of ‘law-making’ within UN system organizations for second edition of Alvarez, “International Organizations as Law-Makers”
2. specific topics on states’ ‘duties to regulate’ to advance sustainable development for new book on “The Duty to Regulate for Sustainable Development”. Exploring overlap between state obligations under a number of treaties and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); to include treaty obligations to protect rights to food, adequate housing, clean water, access to health care, environmental protection, non-discrimination . . .).
Possible assignments may include:
Under (1) above: explain incentives for ‘strategic litigation’ to develop the law through contentious ruling or advisory opinions issued by international courts (e.g., on reparations for climate change, the conflict in Gaza; advisory opinion request by the International Labor Organization), describe recent developments in global health law (e.g., Pandemic Prevention Treaty and reform of WHO’s International Health Regulations); cover normatively significant resolutions issued over past 2 years by the UN General Assembly); under (2) above: describe states’ due diligence duties under the ICESCR and its Committee’s jurisprudence (on human right to food, adequate housing, clean water, health care), under ILO Conventions relevant to SDG goals for ‘decent work’); describe mechanisms for enforcing labor/environmental protections under international investment treaties); connect all of these to specific targets/indicators under the SDGs.

Qualifications (be specific regarding class level: 2L, 3L or LL.M.s can all apply but must have had or be currently enrolled in at least one course (either here or elsewhere) on international law or international human rights or international investment law
Approximate Dates of Employment: Sept 1- Dec. 30 (with possibility to extend into spring term 2025)
Approximate Number of Hours/Week: at least 5 hours per week
Credit: 1 credit (45 hours) or 2 Credit (90 Hours): position is only available for one or two credits (not for pay)
