Mittal Environmental Law Fellow

Location: New York City

Start Date: Fall 2024

The State Energy and Environmental Impact Center is pleased to announce a new fellowship for NYU Law students interested in environmental and climate law.

The State Impact Center is a nonpartisan academic center at NYU School of Law. The Center studies and supports state attorneys general, and other organizations and government agencies, and is dedicated to working towards a healthy and safe environment, guided by inclusive and equitable principles.

The Mittal Environmental Law Fellow will assist with the State Impact Center’s research to study, analyze, and develop innovative legal theories that can be applied to protect people and the environment at the state and national level.

This fellowship is designed for promising law students with an enthusiasm for environmental and climate law and policy.  The Mittal Environmental Law Fellow will be expected to produce written papers directed at both legal and academic audiences; to assist in convening workshops, talks and conferences; and to engage interested organizations and government agencies in the results of the analysis. In addition to excellent research and writing skills, applicants for the Mittal Environmental Law Fellowship should possess an ability to think creatively, take ownership and meet deadlines, and work as part of a team. Prior coursework and professional experience in environmental, climate, and/or energy issues is valued, but not essential.

The Mittal Environmental Law Fellow will be appointed for one academic year beginning in September 2024 and will receive a $12,500 stipend over the course of the fall and spring semesters. This fellowship is only open to current NYU 2L and 3L students.

To Apply:

Interested applicants should send: (1) cover letter; (2) resume; (3) writing sample; and (4) transcript (unofficial is fine) to stateimpactcenter@nyu.edu.  Please include “Mittal Environmental Law Fellow Student Fellowship” in the subject of the email.

Writing samples should be primarily drafted by you and demonstrate organizational and communications skills. We would consider many different written products, including a blog post, op-ed, annual or other report section, slide deck, article, memo, or class paper. The writing sample can be an excerpt and should be approximately 2-5 pages in length.

Applications are due by September 5, 2024.  Only candidates of interest will be contacted. The Mittal Environmental Law Fellow will be subject to the State Impact Center’s conflicts and outside activities policy.
