The Intensive Pro Bono Research Projects (open to JDs and LLMs) are a great opportunity to complete pro bono work for admission to the New York State Bar, as well as for students to gain experience conducting international law research and drafting a research report. We are excited to collaborate with domestic and international non-profit and intergovernmental organizations to offer legal research projects for teams of students to undertake intensively during the summer.
The following three projects will be offered over the Winter Break (January 8-14, 2024).
- The International Lawyers Assisting Workers (ILAW) Network
- The project description can be found here: ILAW x NYU Law Pro Bono
- Human Rights in China
- The two project descriptions can be found here: HRIC x NYU Law Pro Bono Project 1 (January 2024) and HRIC x NYU Law Pro Bono Project 2 (January 2024)
- The Legal Aid Society
- The project description can be found here: Legal Aid Society x NYU Law Pro Bono
Each team will be given instructions on the research sought by the organization, and will work intensively over the allocated week to prepare a report. Participating students must commit to seeing the report through to completion, which is likely to involve more than 50 hours of work total, including beyond the intensive week. However, the aim is for the project to be completed within a relatively short timeframe.
The application instructions for projects offered over the Spring Break (March 18-24, 2024), will be added in early February.
Application Instructions
- Please send a brief letter of interest and resume to Carolina van der Mensbrugghe (cv2199@nyu.edu) and Alaura Rich (adr9719@mercury.law.nyu.edu). The letter should include which organization you are applying to and why (multiple letters are required – one per organization – if you are applying to more than one placement). Please combine your application materials into one PDF, if possible, and include “Pro Bono Intensive Program Application” in the subject line of your email. If you apply to more than one placement, please rank your placement preferences in the body of the email.
- Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will close on 12 PM EST Friday, December 1, 2023. Candidates will be notified of organization selections shortly thereafter.
