Sept. 21: A Conversation with Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner

Posted on

Please join us for a conversation with Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner. Before running for public office, Mr. Krasner worked as a criminal defense lawyer in Philadelphia for 30 years. He began his career with the Federal Public Defender’s Office, and then continued doing other criminal defense work and developed expertise in civil rights cases, frequently representing protestors on a pro bono basis. He became well-known for representing members of movements such as Black Lives Matter and Occupy Philadelphia. In 2017, after former Philly DA Seth Williams stated that he would not run for reelection (and later pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges), Mr. Krasner ran and won a crowded, seven-way Democratic primary. He then won the general election, defeating a former assistant district attorney by a 3 to 1 margin.  Mr. Krasner was re-elected in 2021. From the start, he ran on a progressive, reform-minded platform and since taking office, he has been implementing criminal justice reforms in the Philadelphia DA’s office including by creating an active conviction integrity unit. Among other things, Krasner also instructed assistant prosecutors to stop seeking cash bail for those accused of some misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies, stating that it was unfair to keep people detained simply because they could not afford bail.
