The Center on Race, Inequality and the Law confronts the laws, policies, and practices that lead to the oppression and marginalization of people of color. Four centuries of racism and systemic discrimination have left an indelible mark on the architecture of American society. Racism continues to infect the way policies are developed and applied at all levels of government and in the private sector. It infiltrates our laws, institutions, and systems, resulting in enduring racial inequities in every domain and institution that touches people’s lives, from the criminal legal system to housing, infrastructure development, technology, education, and the environment. By documenting the history of racism in America, elevating the stories of those affected by race-based inequality, supporting community efforts to fight discriminatory policies and practices, and rigorously applying a racial lens to analyze ongoing disparities, the Center identifies actionable, forward-looking solutions to address the injustices caused by racism.
We seek to hire four to six rising 2L law students for our Student Fellowship Program, to take place during the 2023-2024 academic year. Student Fellows will conduct research into a variety of topics related to race and inequality for use in the Center’s advocacy, litigation, and public education under the guidance and supervision of Center leadership. In addition, Student Fellows will work with incarcerated individuals seeking parole in New York. Student Fellows will also assist with the planning and execution of the Center’s organizing activities and events.
Student Fellows will receive a stipend, be featured on the Center’s website, and play an integral role in the Center’s work. The expected time commitment is an average of 10 hours per week over approximately 30 weeks.
